The State Key Laboratory of Solidification Processing of the Northwestern Polytechnical University, founded in 1995, was established upon the National Key Discipline for Casting by the State Government. The lab has since been developed into a center for the National Key Discipline for Materials Science and Engineering. The present Director of the Lab is Professor Huang Weidong, and the Director of the Academic Committee is Academician Gan Yong - the current Deputy President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The lab primarily focuses on the research of solidification theory, as well as related development in materials science and technology.

The lab belongs to the national defence portfolio, primarily in the aerospace industry. On site, there are 8000m2 of research facilities, including some of the world¡¯s most advanced equipment in materials processing. Presently, there are 300 sets of equipment with a total outlay of approximately ¥150 million, many of which have been developed by the researchers of the lab.

The lab has the largest research team with the most comprehensive reach among solidification laboratories in the world. We focus on the integration of materials technology research, providing solutions from basic theory to equipment applications. The lab passed the first national assessment in 2003 and was accordingly named ¡°Domestic First-class State Key Laboratory¡±. In 2008, the lab passed the second assessment, and was ranked first among the seven State Key Laboratories in metals research.

We value openness and quality, and have maintained frequent cooperation and exchange with high-level research institutions around the world. The lab is also an executive member of a number of academic institutions, including the Casting Branch of the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society (CMES) and the Magnesium Chapter of the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association (CNIA).
