To achieve our world’s combined performance, reliability, and sustainability goals, the transition to renewable and clean energy must be complemented by effective venues to reduce the weight of air, ground, and water vehicles.  Weight reductions translate into reductions in fuel consumption, and further, reductions in the carbon footprint.  One way to reduce vehicle weight is to increase the use of well-engineered and recyclable light materials in structural and engine components.  Another way is to create accurate life prediction tools to design components with a higher degree of confidence and reduced safety factors, which requires appropriate data generation, interpretation, and use.  The work at the Integrative Materials Design Center (iMdc) supports both fronts by providing a fundamental understanding of the performance and various failure mechanisms at the micro-/nano-structural scale of traditional and novel materials – the platform for materials/process development and optimization – as well as ICME methods and tools for improved design and life predictions.  The current iMdc research portfolio encompasses developments in the areas of processing, characterization, and fatigue and high temperature evaluation and optimization of materials fabricated by both conventional and advanced methods, including additive manufacturing, friction stir welding, metal matrix nano-composites, cold spray technology, and repair techniques.  An overview of the iMdc program will be first presented, followed by a brief summary of the additive manufacturing activities.

报告人简介:

Dr. Diana Lados is the Founding Director of the Integrative Materials Design Center (iMdc), an industry-government-university consortium established at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) ten years ago, and dedicated to advancing the frontiers of sustainable materials-process-component design and manufacturing for high-performance and reliability.  She received her B.S./M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Polytechnic University of Bucharest in 1997, her second M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Southern Illinois University in 1999, and her Doctorate in Materials Science and Engineering from WPI in 2004.  Dr. Lados is credited with significant research contributions in the areas of materials design and evaluation for fatigue, fatigue crack growth, and high-temperature performance, as well as for her original work in materials processing and advanced manufacturing.  Dr. Lados is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the ASM Fellow – Class of 2017, 2015 Sigma Xi Outstanding Senior Faculty Researcher Award at WPI, the 2014 Brimacombe Medal from TMS, the 2013 Inaugural Constance Tipper Silver Medal from the World Academy of Structural Integrity, an NSF-CAREER Award, the 2012 Silver Medal from ASM, a 2012 “Woman to Watch” in New England for innovation and leadership, and the 2011 Early Career Faculty Fellow Award from TMS.  She was chosen in 2010 by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) to participate in the prestigious Frontiers of Engineering symposia for exceptional research and innovative education.  She has more than 80 publications and 250 technical presentations, seminars, and keynote lectures, as well as several book contributions.  She is a member of several professional societies (including ASM, TMS, Sigma Xi, Alpha Sigma Mu), organized various symposia at international conferences, and chaired several ASM and TMS committees (including the Metallurgical and Materials Transactions Journal Board, Material Advantage Committee for students and young materials professionals, WPI chapter of Sigma Xi, and the Central Massachusetts chapter of ASM).  Dr. Lados has also led the “Materials Integration in Clean Energy Systems” team in the TMS/ASM-DOE program on “Linking Transformational Materials and Processing for an Energy Efficient and Low-Carbon Economy”, and is organizing regularly the “Integrative Materials Design: Performance and Sustainability” symposium at TMS.
